Etymology: Calla: ancient name, meaning obscure
Plants: erect, perennial, emergent, semi-aquatic 5"-10" tall; roots fleshy rhizomes
Leaves: broadly oval with a pointed tip on a 2"-6" long stalk
Flowers: green to white, tiny, 6 stamens; inflorescence a 1"-2" spadix covered with flowers and beside a 2" white, open, flat, oval spathe; blooms June
Fruits: round cluster of red berries
Habitat: bogs, shallows, cold water; in peaty, mucky soil
