Etymology: Calamagrostis: from Greek mythological figure Kalamos, the son of Maiandros (aka Meander), god of the Meander River and agrostis for "grass"

- lemma membranous and smooth
- spikelets with purplish tinge and one floret
- leaves (and overall plant) with bluish-green cast (glaucous)
