Rare on moist boulders and outcrops, usually near water. Subspecies trichomanes grows on acidic rocks such as sandstone, and granite. It is a diploid with smaller spores, 27--32 um. Subspecies quadrivalens D.E.Meyer grows on calcareous rocks, usually limestone and dolomite. It is a tetraploid with larger spores, 37--43 um.
