Etymology: Apios: Greek for "pear" referring to shape of tubers
Plants: twining, annual/perennial, up to 7' long, herbaceous vine; slender rhizomes with 2 or more elongated tubers
Leaves: pinnately-divided into an odd number (usually 5-7) of leaflets
Flowers: pink to brown, 5-parted, 1/2" long, either solitary or in pairs; inflorescence a dense, conical cluster (raceme) of stalked flowers; blooms July-Aug.
Fruits: linear pod coiling after opening, several seeds
Habitat: wet to moist; woods, streambanks
A vine of floodplain forests, hardwood swamps, tamarack swamps, mesic woods, wet to mesic prairies, marshes, fens, sedge meadows, beaches, lakeshores and streambanks, wet fields and thickets, shrub-carrs, roadsides, ditches, and wet areas along railroads. The leaves are sometimes trifoliolate rather than pinnately compound. Wisconsin plants appear to be sterile triploids (Simon & Bruneau, 2004), their widely scattered range in the state perhaps being due to movement of tubers via water or by Native Americans who used them as food.
