Common in the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin, extending northward near the Mississippi River, and occasionally found in southeastern Wisconsin, disjunct from the Appalachian region, usually in dry open woodlands, oak savannas, barrens, dry prairies, and pastures. It is a diploid progenitor of both A. howellii and A. parlinii.
