Leaves: basal, single, oval, clasping, shiny, persisting when in flower
Flowers: white to purple, 6-parted, 1/2"- 3/4" wide, lip white with purple spots, 3-lobed and notched at the tip; inflorescence a few stalked flowers on a 4"-10" tall, spike-like cluster (raceme); blooms July-Aug.
Habitat: cold limy conifer swamps, fens
