Etymology: Alopecurus: Greek alopex for "fox" and oura for "tail"

Conservation Status: Native
Along streams, shores of lakes and ponds, marshes, beach swales, mudflats, sloughs, wet prairies, sedge meadows, wet fields, ditches, rarely in hardwood swamps; also in wet disturbed areas such as in quarries and gravel pits and along railroads. This is our only native species in the genus, with most records from the northwest and south.
