Etymology: Agalinis: "remarkable flax" in botanical Latin.
Plants: erect, annual, 8"-24" tall forb, yellowish-green, pale when dry, many erect branches; stems rounded; partially parasitic
Leaves: opposite, narrow, yellowish-green, the side branches with few small leaves
Flowers: pink, 5-parted, 1/2"-3/4" long, long stalked, 4 stamens with the lower stamens longer; usually a solitary flower at the ends of the branches or main stem; blooms Aug.-Sept.
Fruits: roundish, up to 1/5" long capsule with yellowish-brown seeds
Habitat: dry; woods, hills, barrens
