Etymology: Acer: the classical Latin name for the maple
Plants: perennial tree up to 150' tall; juice watery; bark dark, thick, mostly deeply furrowed plates
Leaves: opposite, undivided but 5, or more often, 3 shallow lobes; indentations (sinuses) between main lobes rounded; the edges and tips usually drooping; dark above and lighter below with fine hairs
Fruits: winged, paired fruit; fruit drawing
Habitat: moist, often along streams
