Etymology: Platanthera: from the Greek for "flat" and "flower," hence "wide or flat anthered"
Plants: erect, perennial, 16"-40" tall forb
Leaves: lower lance-like to linear, upper much smaller
Flowers: white, 6-parted, 1" long, lips deeply 3-lobed and long-fringed 1/3 to 1/2 the length, petals oblong and toothed; inflorescence a 3"-8" cylindrical, spike-like cluster of almost stalkless flowers; blooms June-July
Habitat: wet; meadows, prairies
