Native to Asia. Specimens from just three Wisconsin counties. Those from Dane and Rock counties are noted as “spreading from cultivation”. Sauk County specimen was found along edge of woods at south side of Devil’s Lake. Aralia elata could be mistaken for A. spinosa, but has sessile, serrate leaflets vs. petioluled leaflets that are remotely toothed.
