Etymology: Lespedeza: after Cespedez, Spanish governor of east Flordia in late 18th century
Plants: erect, perennial, 1'-4' tall forb often with many branches, mostly hairless
Leaves: 3-parted, stalks almost as long as the elliptical leaflets
Flowers: purple to pink, 5-parted, 1/3" long; inflorescence a loose cluster (raceme) of a few, stalked flowers; blooms Aug.
Habitat: dry; upland woods, glades, prairies; in rocky, sandy soil
Conservation Status: Special Concern
