A distinctive and beautiful native species of mesic or sandy oak woods, cedar glades, riverbanks, wooded talus slopes, prairies, and occasionally along roadsides and railroads. Most common in the southeast, ranging sparingly north to Winnebago Co. and disjunct to the northwest along the Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers from La Crosse to Polk Co.
