Etymology: Persicaria: peach-like, the medieval name for knotweed
Plants: erect to sprawling, perennial, up to 40" tall forb; stems with nodes always hairy; from rhizomes
Leaves: alternate, lance-like to linear, mostly less than 1 1/2" wide
Flowers: white-green to pink, petals and petal-like sepals connected at the base; inflorescence thin, erect clusters often interrupted toward the base on usually hairy stalks jointed at the top
Fruits: black, shiny, smooth, oval, dry seed with 3-rounded angles and concave sides
Habitat: wet; beaches, marshes, shallows
