Forests of oak, sugar maple-basswood, oak-red maple, oak-hickory, conifer-hardwoods, sugar maple-beech-oak-hemlock, elm-hickory-sugar maple. This is a handsome forest understory grass of generally dry to dry-mesic forests. The shiny, resupinate leaves and black lemmas with long awns are distinctive. Found mainly in the southwestern corner of the state but scattered elsewhere, especially in the east.
