In similar habitats to O. occidentale but ranging farther north and east in dry calcareous blufftop prairies, brushy openings on rocky wooded slopes, and sandy soils along rivers and floodplains. Williams (1996) carried out a survey of this taxon and L. occidentale in Wisconsin, examining historical distribution, ecology, and threats. He argued that fire suppression and even lack of grazing may be contributing to the decline of these taxa in the state.
