Common in hardwood or mixed hardwood - conifer upland woods in northern Wisconsin on sandy acidic soils, often forming large clones, less common in open areas and marginal wetlands. It is most easily recognized by the strongly spreading leaves from near the point on the main stem where the main ascending branches arise, extending upward on the stem and main branches for about 5 cm. Leaves on branchlets of fresh material in end view show six rows of leaves, and all leaves are flat, equally divergent, and about the same size.
