Deciduous forests, most often southern dry-mesic to mesic but also floodplain types, rarely mixed forests with white pine or hemlock, especially on edges, in openings, and along paths, commonly on open or shaded roadsides and railroads, cool, damp slopes, gullies, ravines, bases of bluffs, or talus, also stream banks and rank, weedy vegetation in pastures, fencerows, abandoned fields, unused roads, and old mine spoils.
