Etymology: Tomanthera: possibly from tometum for "hairy"- referring to the hairy stems separating this genus from Agalinis
Plants: erect, annual, 12"-32" tall forb, simple or with a few branches, roughly hairy
Leaves: opposite, stalkless, lance-like, some with lobes at the base
Flowers: purple, 5-parted, 3/4"-1" long; inflorescence a leafy spike with stalkless flowers in the upper leaf axils; blooms Aug.-Sept.
Fruits: roundish capsule
Habitat: moderate moisture; prairies, open woods
