• 1a.Cauline leaves all or mostly alternate, lobed more than halfway to the midrib; stems hairy throughout; upper lip of the corolla with a prolonged tooth on each side of the apex; capsule 2–3 times longer than the calyx P. canadensis

• 1b.Cauline leaves all opposite, lobed less than halfway to the midrib; stems glabrous distally, sparsely pubescent proximally; upper lip of the corolla with at most a shallow tooth on each side of the apex; capsule scarcely longer than the calyx P. lanceolata
