Native to the southeastern United States, this species is widely cultivated and has been collected once as a weed under a bird feeder in 1984. It doesn’t seem to have escaped and become established yet. The spikelets look like those of some Bromus species but differ in having several empty basal lemmas; Bromus also possesses fused sheaths.
