Habitat:
Sandy prairie on terrace several meters above Wisconsin River floodplain and never flooded. Flat or old stabilized dunes, with one active sand blow, with Aristida tuberculosa, Solidago nemoralis, Tephrosia virginiana, Monarda punctata, Phemeranthus rugospermus, Leptoloma cognatum, Schizachyrium scoparium. The surrounding scrubby woods with Quercus velutina, Pinus banksiana.
Occurrence Remarks:
Huge patches or populations, all of very short shrublets less than 0.4 m. tall. Growth rings hard to read, but largest stems seem to be 6-7 years old. Sap milky, solidifying light orange. Voucher for wood specimens at Kw, Lw, MADw.
