Fringe of trees and shrubs, Populus tremuloides, Picea glauca, Pteridium aquilinum, Salix spp., Prunus pensylvanica, Cornus alternifolia. Level, open areas maintained in early stage of regeneration of Populus tremuloides for sharp-tail grouse habitat, edge of extensive Sphagnum bog.
Shrub 4 m. tall, the largest stem 8 cm. in diameter at base, then branching above the base into several stems; twigs not brittle at base. Voucher for wood specimens at Kw, Lw, MADw, MEXUw, RSAw, the wood specimen from stem 5 cm. in diameter, 9 years old. Leaves glaucous below; young leaves red, but not conspicuous from a distance (compare with no. 63088, S. discolor).
