Habitat: Bog dominated by Sphagnum, Chamaedaphne calyculata, Kalmia polifolia, Ledum groenlandicum and Betula pumila, with scattered dwarf Larix laricina, Picea mariana, and Alnus incana ssp. rugosa.
Occurrence Remarks: Shrublets, the woody parts mostly buried in the Sphagnum and to at least 0.9 cm. in diameter and brown, the aerial stems dark gray, more slender. Voucher for wood specimen at Kw, Lw, MADw. Leaves first greenish white beneath, later ferruginous.
