Occurrence Remarks:
Tree 7 m tall, 11 cm in diameter. Voucher for wood specimen, MADw. Bark smooth, gray, the trunk somewhat fluted. Pistillate inflorescence arching below the leaves, the same color as the light green on the underside of the leaves; only one found after a careful search (the duplicate at WIS). No staminate catkins present at this time of the year on this species, unlike in Corylus americana. Ostrya virginiana, Betula papyrifera and B. alleghaniensis in this same forest.
