Observations by Ed Sternberg and Ted Cochrane.
Occurrence Remarks: Photo only! Shay's trillium (Trillium recurvatum f. shayi) has cream-colored stamens, unlike a rarer cream-petaled variant, T. recurvatum f. luteum, which has red or red-streaked stamens. www.illinoiswildflowers.info/woodland/plants/ reports that Shay's trillium has unmottled, uniformly green leaves, whereas the leaves in this population are mottled like those of red prairie trilliums around them. Petal color of infrequent individuals seemed intermediate between Shay's trillium and prairie trillium. Prairie trillium also present in nearby rich decidous woods, a nine-acre second-growth remnant with a number of small vernal wetlands and many spring-flowering herbs and shrubs. - Observation be Ed Sternberg and Ted Cochrane.
