Habitat: Fencerow between perennial pasture and cultivated field, NW-facing slope, unshaded, the fencerow being invaded by Zanthoxylum americanum, Prunus serotina, P. virginiana, Rubus occidentalis, Ribes missouriense.
Occurrence Remarks: Shrub 4 m tall, but had been cut when young and resprouted so it is a few years older, the stem 5.5 cm in diameter. Voucher for wood specimen, MADw. Only one plant of this species seen here, and otherwise never noticed on this farm since botanizing began
