Habitat:
Gentle slopes between base of NW-facing Wisconsin River bluffs and floodplain, just above floodplain itself. Rich woods of Celtis occidentalis, Gymnocladus dioica, Acer saccharum (not A. saccharinum), Tilia americana, Ulmus americana, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, F. nigra, Asarum canadense, Laportea canadensis.
Occurrence Remarks:
Shrub 5 m tall, 6 cm in diameter, the maximum size here, in a clump of a few stems of various sizes, the smaller ones replacing the older ones as they senesce; stems always arching. Voucher for wood specimen, MADw. Plants mostly in light gaps or where canopy thin. Fruiting inflorescences hanging; fruit yellow-green, inflated, with shiny light brown seeds; herbarium vouchers mostly from nearby shrubs at edge where fruiting more abundant.
