Habitat:
Unshaded fencerow between cultivated fields, broad flat valley bottom of river, but above floodplain. With Ambrosia trifida, young Quercus macrocarpa, Ilex verticillata, Phalaris arundinacea.
Occurrence Remarks:
Voucher for wood specimen, MADw.; Dense clump of ca. 25 stems, 1.6 m tall, 1.3 cm in diameter. Leafy and flowering stems with only axillary spines; lower portion of younger stems light tan, with axillary spines and abundant reflexed bristly internodal spines; oldest stems unarmed, dark, the bark beginning to peel. Flowers hanging; sepals pale yellow-green with red-pink in the middle; petals inconspicuous, pinkish; anthers pale yellow.
