Locality:
United States, Wisconsin, Juneau, 10.5 km (by air) SE of Necedah, Buckhorn State Park, around main campground where many trees are being removed from Pinus banksiana, Quercus velutina woods on level, very sandy soil.
Occurrence Remarks:
Tree 15 m tall, 15 cm in diameter (both measured). Voucher for wood specimen, MADw, the specimen from straight central stem, 5 m above the ground. Voucher herbarium specimens from tip of crown, the leaves, denser and a darker green than those from shaded lower branches of this species in this area. This individual with only young, unopened cones, and the cones are persistent; the cone scales slighly loosening during drying, but not to the extent of the spreading or reflexed scales of no. 62068. An adjacent individual (Nee 62068) of the same size, evidently genetically very different, with even the youngest cones all open, and open cones persistent for many yeras, with no closed cones at all.
