Habitat:
Mesic northern forest (Acer saccharum-Tilia americana-Pinus strobus with Betula saplings) with not-particularly-rich groundlayer: Conopholis americana, Festuca subverticillata (rare), Oryzopsis asperifolia, Osmorhiza claytonii, Poa saltuensis, Polygonatum pubescens, & Viola sororia. (C. convoluta, syn.). Strongly cespitose, with 49 fertile culms in one clump.
