Habitat:
In shrubby transition zone between open floodplain and lowland conifer forest. Moist, peaty soil. Associates include scattered Thuja occidentalis, Larix laricina, Picea glauca, Ilex verticillata and Alnus incana subsp. rugosa. Herb layer dominated by Carex stricta. Scirpus cyperinus, Calamagrostis canadensis, and Equisetum sylvaticum common also. Large multistemmed shrub. Part of a patch of four plants. Locally uncommon. The CNNF has been notified and may eradicate.(UWSP, WIS).
