Habitat: Dark, peaty soil. Shrubby lowland woods. Under moderate shade of Acer rubrum and Populus tremuloides. Shrubs include Corylus cornuta, Alnus rugosa, Rubus setosus cf., and abundant Vaccinium angustifolium. Herbs include Maianthemum canadense, Carex intumescens, Equisetum sylvaticum, Trientalis borealis, and Calamagrostis canadensis, interspersed with scattered patches of Sphagnum spp. Large, multistemmed shrub about 6 m tall. Locally common.
