Habitat: Mature 2nd-growth northern dry-mesic forest, somewhat open in aspect: Acer saccharum (1 dom.)-Quercus rubra (2 dom.)-Betula papyrifera (3 dom.), with Pinus strobus (locally rare); shrub layer: Abies balsamea (very common), Dirca palustris; groundlayer: Carex pensylvanica (overwhelming dominant). Assoc. for 14870: Acer saccharum seedlings, Anemone quinquefolia, Aquilegia canadensis (rare), Dryopteris intermedia, Lycopodium dendroideum, Maianthemum canadense, Onoclea sensibilis, and Osmunda claytoniana. On earth bank covered with ferns.
