Habitat: Thicket-covered field; poor dry soil (light brown, looose, fine, sandy, low in organic matter). Around edges of huge Robinia hispida colony; assoc.: Elaeagnus umbellata (2 very large shrubs), Juniperus virginiana (1 tree), Malus pumila (2 trees), & Morus alba (2 trees); groundlayer: Poa pratensis dominant, with Bromus inermis, Dactylis glomerata, Galium aparine, Hackelia virginiana (few), &. Urtica dioica. Old homesite, judging by lanes, plantings (Iris germanica 100 yds. away), & cistern cover in area. Five old shrubs, long-persistent after cult., sending up occasional shoots from roots and thus very slowly spreading. One adult branch and one root sucker collected. Sheet 1 of 2.
