Habitat: Southern mesic forest (Tilia americana dominant, with Ostrya virginiana, Fraxinus pennsylvanica var. subintegerrima, Betula papyrifera, Juniperus virginiana); steep N-facing slope, moist mossy slightly disturbed ground; well-drained, grayish, rather sandy, fine silty loam. Assoc.: Equisetum arvense, Prunus serotina and Tilia americana seedlings, Carex pedunculata (abundant), Smilax ecirrhata (rare), Aquilegia canadensis, Ranunculus abortivus, R. recurvatus, Anemone quinquefolia, Ribes americanum, Parthenocissus inserta, and Galium concinnum.
