Verbatim Coordinates: T11N R04E sec35 SE4SE4;
Georeference Remarks: Latitude/Longitude was derived from the Township, Range, Section location. This causes an imprecision.
Habitat: On a small (2 x 1 foot) quartzite shelf on the south wall of falls gorge. Small hanging valley. The floor of this niche is a mass of Asarum canadense, Trillium spp., and ferns growing on a rich allochthonously derived soil which is entirely unattached to the underlying quartzite. Growing abundantly. Considerable exploration of this general area (since 1968) has failed to disclose further stations for this plant. If one stands in the bottom of the gorge as close to the base of the water as practicable and looks to the right (south) a small hanging valley will be noticed. By climbing up into this niche and standing so as to face south the mat of Camptosorus will be noticed on the right at about waist level. Extreme care is required so as not to dislodge an extremely beautiful area. The ferns can be nicely seen with the aid of binoculars. The falls and its geology are discussed in: Thwaites, F.T. (1959) "Land forms of the Baraboo district, Wisconsin." Trans. Wisc. Acad. Sci., Arts and Letters. Vol 47, pp. 137-159. Samuel Weidman was a student of Wisconsin geology (born in the Baraboo vicinity); Thwaites (supra) formally suggests his name be associated with the falls in his paper.
