Habitat: In needle mats along edge of footpath on moist, sandy slope, in woods composed of scattered Pinus resinosa and P. strobus (both ca. 30" diam.), Quercus borealis (14"), Betulya papyrifera (12"), Acer rubrum (1-6"), and Tsuga canadensis (3-4"), with Pteridium aquilinum, Aster macrophyllus, Diervilla lonicera, Pyrola asarifolia, Cornus canadensis and C. rugosa, Maianthemum canadense, Coptis trifolia, Clintonia borealis, Gaultheria procumbens, and Linnaea borealis. Common as scattered individuals or in small clumps.
