Habitat: Thicket-filled Juniperus virginiana woods (with Populus tremuloides & dwarfed Quercus macrocarpa) developed on flat dolomite pavement; soil reddish, silty clayey loam, very thin; dry, well-drained habitat. Assoc.: Carex pensylvanica, Cornus racemosa, Fragaria virginiana, Juniperus communis-abundant, Prunus serotina saplings, Symphoricarpos albus-abundant, Helianthus hirsutus, Monarda fistulosa, Smilacina racemosa-common. Forming patches in openings. Herbage glaucous; ligules yellow.
