Habitat: Southern mesic forest, Acer saccharum the overwhelming dominant in this part of the woods, with Quercus rubra, Ulmus rubra, & Carya cordiformis in the canopy, Staphylea trifolia & Ribes missouriense in the shrub layer, & Alliaria petiolata (starting to come in), Anemone quinquefolia, Galium aparine, Hydrophyllum virginianum, Laportea canadensis, Osmorhiza claytonii, Phlox divaricata ssp. laphamii, Ranunculus abortivus, Smilacina racemosa, & Smilax hispida in the understory. Loosely cespitose, flring culms 0--5 and sterile shoots 5--16 per clump. Expansive colony extending 15 m up-and-down slope X 7 m (top)--27 m (bottom) across. Locally abundant. Fertile if light soil, shaded.
