Habitat: In woods between road and lakeshore. Well drained sandy soil, in fairly deep shade to nearly full sun. Overstory of small Quercus rubra, with lesser amounts of Pinus strobus and Betula paprifera. Understory of Pinus strobus and scattered Prunus serotina. Ground layer includes Carex pensylvanica, Gaultheria procumbens, Danthonea spicata, and scattered Peridium aquilinum. Dense stand. The dominant understory plant within a nearly 4 ha area. Shaded plants around 1 m tall, with plants in sunnier spots reaching about 1.5 m.
