Habitat:
Xeric scrub oak-jack pine forest (typical of zone of original oak savanna vegetation) with ground layer dominated by Carex pennsylvanica and shrubs conspicuous. Sandy soil on gentle slope leading down to small kettlehole lake. Associated species for Cochrane, et al. 10333: Corylus americana, Prunus pensylvanica, Chimaphila umbellata, Gaultheria procumbens, & Diervilla lonicera. Apparently spontaneous. Producing abundant cones in upper part of tree.
