Habitat:
Marshy meadow, soil black; silty, heavy. Wet. Associates: swamp saxifrage, willow, Cornus, Violaceae, etc. (wet meadow flora). Full sunlight. Stems 24"-36", strong, branched slightly ridged. Flowers numerous, in an elongate panicle. Upper stem (1/2 of plant) dark purple or greenish purple, stiff, hollow. Sepals 4, light purple to white or whitish green, petals absent; pistils numerous, 9-14, mostly 11-14, dark purple with creamy stigmas, stigmas elongated, bi-symmetric. Numerous (pistillate plants not common, staminate plants very common).
