Habitat: Woods with history of cutting but no grazing. Rich low deciduous woods (Acer saccharum-Tilia americana ass'n, with Quercus alba (large old trees), Fraxinus americana, Ulmus rubra, Ostrya virginiana, Carpinus caroliniana) on first terrace of river; dark-colored silt loam soil. Hab. B): forest understory. Assoc. species for Cochrane, Cochrane & Moore 10069: Sphenopolis intermedia, Carex amphibola v. turgida, C. gracillima, C. hirtifolia, C. rosea, C. woodii, Allium canadense, A. burdicikii, A. tricoccum, Smilacina racemosa, Trillium grandiflorum, Geum canadense, Galium concinnum, Impatiens.
