Habitat: Southern mesic forest (Acer saccharum dominant, Tilia americana subdominant, with Ostrya virginiana, Betula papyrifera, Quercus alba, Juniperus virginiana); steep N-facing slope, muddy mossy slightly disturbed ground; well drained, greyish, rather sandy, fine silty loam. Assoc.: Equisetum pratense, Cystopteris (C. fragilis v. mackayi or C. protrusa-common), Carex pedunculata (abundant), C. blanda, C. peckii, C. sprengelii, Anemone quinquefolia, Hepatica acutiloba, Ranunculus recurvatus, and Solidago flexicaulis. Rhizomatous clump of 42 spreading culms, the plant 57 cm across in one direction and 46 cm in the other.
