Habitat: In sandy soil. [This plant of Carex sterlilis was mounted by the collector on the same sheet with one of C. muhlenbergii, a species characteristic of dry sandy soil. Carex sterilis occurs in wet calcareous soil, in WI scattered in fens in the SE part of the state and in marly bogs, meadows and cedar swamps in across the N - this record is considered to unreliable to map - T.S. Cochrane, 1978]
