Habitat: Old field, Poa pratensis dominant, with Asclepias syriaca, Physalis heterophylla, Rosa sp., and Quercus velutina seedlings, little else immediately associated with the sedge. The field borders an area of barrens-like habitat consisting of a patchwork of Quercus velutina woodland (with Q. macrocarpa, Q. alba, Juniperus virginiana) and prairie openings whose groundlayer contains a mixture of old field (Poa pratensis-dominant, Rumex acetosella, Potentilla simplex, Acillea millefolium), dry prairie (Panicum leibergii, Arabis lyrata, Amorpha canescens, Lithospermum caroliniense), and oak barrens (Lespedeza capitata, Helianthemum canadense) species on sandy soil.
