Habitat: Fine if smallish stand of upland hardwoods on relatively deep soil (Miami Silt Loam). Acer saccharum dom., Fagus grandifolia subdom., with Tilia americana, also Ostrya virginiana, Prunus serotina, and Tsuga canadensis (this in one wetter area) . Associated species for Cochrane & Cochrane 6397-6405: Adiantum pedatum, Athyrium filix-femina, Botrychium virginianum, Cyptopteris bulbifera, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Matteucia struthiopteris var. pensylvanica, Polystichum acrostichoides, Carex albursina, C. hitchcockiana, C. laxiflora, C. pensylvanica (dominant in ground layer in N2), C. pedunculata, C. convoluta, C. sparganioides, Arisaema triphyllum, Sanguinaria canadensis, Allium tricoccum, Erythronium sp. (abundant on mounds), Polygonatum pubescens, Smilacina racemosa, Uvularia grandiflora, Anemone quinquefolia, Hepatica acutiloba, Thalictrum dioicum, Caulophyllum thalictroides, Dicentra cucullaria, Dentaria diphylla, Mitella diphylla, Ribes americana, Fragaria spp., Amphicarpa bracteata, Prunus virginiana, Impatiens sp., Parthenocissus inserta, Viola canadensis, V. (pubescens or eriocarpa), Circaea lutetiana subsp. canadensis, Aralia nudicaulis, Osmorhiza claytonii, Fraxinus sp. seedlings, Triosteum sp., Galium triflorum, Aster macrophyllus, Solidago flexicaulis.
