Habitat: Fine if smallish stand of upland hardwoods on relatively deep soil (Miami Silt Loam). Acer saccharum dom.-Fagus grandifolia subdom., with Tilia americana, also Ostrya virginiana, Prunus serotina, and, in one wetter area, Tsuga canadensis. Assoc. species for Cochrane & Cochrane 8057-8095, 11478: Lycopodium annotinum, Athyrium angustum, Cystopteris fragilis v. fragilis, Poa saltuensis, P. languida, Schizachne purpurascens, Milium effusum, Carex arctata, C. deweyana, Clintonia borealis, Smilacina racemosa, Polygonatum pubescens, Trillium grandiflorum, Actaea pachypoda, A. rubra, Thalictrum dioicum, Dentaria diphylla, Streptopus roseus, Ribes cynosbati, Viola pensylvanica, Aralia nudicaulis, Osmorhiza claytonii, Galium triflorum, etc.
