Habitat: Fine if smallish stand of upland hardwoods on relatively deep soil (Miami Silt Loam). Acer saccharum dom.-Fagus grandifolia subdom., with Tilia americana, also Ostrya virginiana, Prunus serotina, and Tsuga canadensis (this in one wetter area) . Assoc. species: Adiantum pedatum, Athyrium filix-femina, Botrychium virginianum, Cystopteris bulbifera, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Matteucia struthiopteris var. pensylvanica, Polystichum acrostichoides, Carex albursina, C. hitchcockiana, C. laxiflora, C.pensylvanica (dominant in ground layer in N2), Carex pedunculata, C. convoluta, C. sparganioides, Arisaema triphyllum, Sanguinaria canadensis, Allium tricoccum, Erythronium sp. (abundant on mounds), Polygonatum pubescens, Smilacina racemosa, Uvularia grandiflora, Anemone quinquefolia, Hepatica acutiloba, Thalictrum dioicum, Caulophyllum thalictroides, Dicentra cucullaria, Dentaria diphlla, Mitella diphylla, Ribes americana, Frgaria sp., Amphicarpa bracteata, Prunus virginiana, Impatiens sp.,
